A day of somber reflection, reflecting on what we'd miss in a world in a world without Jesus

Black Saturday is the last day of fasting for Catholics in the Philippines. It commemorates the day that Jesus lay in his tomb after he died.  It is the final day of Holy Week and the day before Easter Sunday. It is also a day of waiting and anticipation as Christians around the world prepare to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. According to Catholic teaching, it was also on Black Saturday that Christ “descended into hell.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that “the dead Christ went down to the realm of the dead. He opened heaven’s gates for the just who had gone before him.”

The vigil celebration may include lighting fires and candles to symbolize Christ's passing from death to life and tolling bells to signify the joyous end of Lent. there is a belief that bruises or lacerations will be hard to heal during this season of Holy Week.
