MAUNDY THURSDAY
Christians remembering the Last Supper
April 6, 2023
Jesus offers His body and blood in the last supper; God offers His sacrifice
Also known as Holy Thursday and Sheer Thursday, is a Christian holy day that commemorates events known as the Washing of the Feet and the Last Supper. At this final meal shared with Jesus before his arrest, Jesus gives his disciples the greatest of the ten commandments according to the Christian Church. Jesus commands his disciples to "love one another as I have loved you." Jesus giving this command to his disciples is how Thursday of Holy Week received its name, Maundy Thursday. Maundy is a word derived from the Latin word for "command." In addition to giving his disciples this command, Jesus also washed the feet of the 12 disciples.
To celebrate Maundy Thursday, Christians will participate in communion, and priests will wash the feet of 12 people in memory of Jesus' similar action at the Last Supper with his own disciples. People especially Filipinos put Last Supper posters inside their houses and often have a simple meal of bread and wine. To this event eating meat is still prohibited as some believe so.
